What does it cost to become a pilot in Indonesia?
Most Indonesian cadets spend about Rp 900 million to Rp 1.55 billion to get from zero to a commercial licence. Here is where that money goes.
The short answer: training from zero to a commercial pilot licence with an instrument rating costs most Indonesian cadets about Rp 900 million to Rp 1.55 billion, once everything is counted. Training in the United States and converting the licence afterwards costs more, at around Rp 1.9 to 2.5 billion at today's exchange rate.
Those figures come from the published fee sheets of the flight schools we have studied, run through our own cost calculator in October 2026. They are rounded ranges, not quotes. Your own number depends on the school, the payment plan and you.
How much more than the brochure will you pay?
| Where you train | Headline tuition | Typical total, all in |
|---|---|---|
| A flight school in Indonesia | Rp 760 million – 1.4 billion | Rp 900 million – 1.55 billion |
| A flight school in the US, then converting to an Indonesian licence | US$83,000 – 103,000 | Rp 1.9 – 2.5 billion |
The gap between the two columns, typically Rp 130–250 million in Indonesia, is the part most families don't budget for.
Where does the money go?
Tuition is the headline: ground school, flight training and the simulator. Check whether it includes a multi-engine rating. Airlines require one. Where it is optional inside a package it adds roughly Rp 100–150 million; bought later on its own, it costs about Rp 110–240 million, often Rp 30–60 million more than inside the same school's package.
Living costs depend on what the school includes. Many Indonesian schools are residential and include a dormitory, and some include meals. If they don't, budget for food, laundry and transport for every month of training.
Extra flight hours. Packages are built around a set number of hours, and many cadets need more before they pass a checkride. In Indonesia an extra hour typically costs Rp 3–7 million. In the US it is US$200–400. Budget for about one hour in ten on top of the package.
Exams, checkrides and licences. Some schools include the first attempt at each. Others charge separately, and a repeat attempt is almost always extra.
Entry tests. Medical, English, psychology and aptitude testing cost Rp 4–20 million at most schools. You pay before you know whether you are accepted, and the fee is usually non-refundable.
Licence conversion, if you train abroad. An FAA licence has to be converted to an Indonesian (DGCA) licence before an Indonesian airline can hire you. Depending on the route, that costs from a few tens of millions up to around Rp 100 million, and it adds time.
Essentials no brochure lists. Aviation medicals, uniform and kit, a tablet with flight apps, English tests, and travel to the school and home: about Rp 30 million over a course in Indonesia. In Indonesia a Class 1 medical is valid for six months and a Class 2 for a year, so most cadets take two or three medicals during training. A headset is optional if the school lends them.
Paying in instalments usually costs more than paying up front. Expect the total to rise by a few percent.
Does the exchange rate matter?
Costs priced in US dollars, at some schools in Indonesia and on every US route, move with the exchange rate: on a US route, a 10% move adds roughly Rp 180–235 million to the total. Budget with a margin, or lock in the rate when you pay.
Are there cheaper, subsidised places?
State aviation academies offer subsidised places through national selection. The cost to the cadet is far lower, but places are limited, selection is highly competitive, and age and height limits are strict. It is worth applying if you qualify, but it is not a plan you can count on.
What should you check before you commit?
- Get each school's full fee sheet, not the brochure.
- Ask how many hours their last cohort actually flew, and what one extra hour costs.
- Ask which exams and checkrides are included, and what a repeat costs.
- Ask how many aircraft are flying this week — not how many the school owns — how many cadets are training, and how many instructors there are. Those ratios decide how fast you progress, and every extra month costs money.
- Check the entry criteria — age, height, eyesight, English — before paying any test fee.
- Put the numbers side by side in the cost calculator.

What comes after the commercial licence?
A commercial licence is not where the spending ends. Most Indonesian airlines now also expect ATPL theory and a type rating before they hire, and a type rating adds roughly Rp 490 million at today's exchange rate. Read what Indonesian airlines ask for before they hire a pilot.
